A family plan for an emergency

A short plan helps everyone know whom to contact and what to bring. Prepare it with the older person, in a language and format they can use easily.

Record contacts and practical needs

Choose a main contact and a backup. Record the exact address, building entrance, clinician and communication needs: hearing, vision, language or assistive equipment. Keep an up-to-date medicines and allergies list with health documents. The person should know where the copy is and who receives it; do not display private information in a public place.

Rehearse before the plan is needed

Check that the phone is charged, contacts are readable and a trusted person can enter under the agreed arrangement. Consider suitable transport, stairs, a wheelchair and pets. Ask the provider what happens to equipment during a power or internet failure. Rehearse communication by voice, text or another method that genuinely works for the person.

Separate an alert from emergency help

For immediate danger, contact the local emergency service and follow the operator’s instructions. Do not wait for a general form, email or app reply. If you use Monitorimi, ask exactly who receives alerts, when they respond and what happens if they do not answer. An alert device does not itself guarantee a rescue team. Review the plan after changes to the address, needs or support person.

Plan together

Difficult decisions become clearer when wishes are discussed early. A family note can help the conversation but is not a legal document.
