Choosing care at home

Start with an ordinary day: what does the person want to do independently, and where do they want help? A service name does not always tell you which tasks it includes.

An older couple talks with a younger family member in their living room.

Separate different kinds of help

Companionship, meal preparation, personal care and nursing are not interchangeable. List tasks, times and preferences about language or who enters the home. For clinical needs, ask the relevant professional and check the provider’s qualifications. Live-in care does not automatically mean uninterrupted work throughout every day and night. Ask how working hours, rest and replacement cover are arranged.

Compare providers using the same questions

Ask in writing about included tasks, visit length, total cost, cancellation terms and complaints. Who comes if the usual worker is ill? Who holds keys and records? How are changes reported? Do not commit solely on the strength of an advertisement. Request an introductory conversation, references and a clear explanation of responsibilities before agreeing to a service.

Review the experience together

After the first visits, ask the person privately whether they feel heard and whether the pace of help suits them. Note what works and what needs changing. Revisit the arrangement when needs change. Our services guide links to providers for a first conversation; AgeCare does not employ carers on your behalf or guarantee availability in every town.

General information for organising care. It does not replace professional assessment. In an emergency, contact your local emergency service.
