Staying mobile without driving

An outings plan can begin with the places and people that matter to you. Start with specific journeys, rather than the idea of giving everything up.

Map an ordinary week

List the outings that matter: shopping, appointments, visits and activities you enjoy. For each, consider timing, companionship and the return journey. Discuss what you want to organise yourself and where help would be welcome. You might explore public transport, a transport operator or an arrangement with family, without assuming that every option is available in your area or at the time needed.

Check the whole journey

Before booking, ask about getting into the vehicle, space for mobility equipment, the meeting point and the assistance actually provided. Check access at the destination and the return trip, not only departure. Ask about price and cancellation. If you wish, try a familiar route with a companion you choose. Keep the operator’s contact and an alternative plan if the journey changes.

Separate transport planning from driving rules

This guide does not determine fitness to drive or set driving-licence deadlines. Discuss health questions with the relevant professional and document requirements with the competent authority. In Albania, official driving-licence information is available through DPSHTRR. For cross-border journeys, check requirements with the relevant authorities rather than assuming that one country’s rules apply in another. A transport plan and a licensing decision are separate matters.
